We ended up creating a story built around one dude who was just super shitty and annoying, who’s focused on his wealth and is kind of fratty but also hipster. We were exploring the classic cliches in the writing session. I want to go dance to it in the club at some point. The chorus is the break from that and it’s like, ‘Let’s go party and get fucked up!’ It’s a dancey jam. I’m kind of tying that frustration to one person because every line ends in that ‘ I can’t without you’. Everything I say is me being really frustrated at certain things like, ‘ New week, no sleep, no key / I lost ’em in the street / And no I can’t see without you’. I had to be really quiet cause all my roommates were sleeping and I was literally whispering the melody into my voice memos.” ‘Photo ID’ The guitar part is Bossa Nova-derived, I wrote it in my house at like 3am to a YouTube loop I found. So it made its way into my psyche and into the song (‘ When I’m gone my baby makin’ eggplant parmesan / When’s he’s with his other baby he’s a vegetarian’). Like, sharing food was really important to us bonding heavily at the beginning of our relationship. It always came up as a thing that he was upset about. She was controlling and it seemed like she’d make all the food and dictated how he lived. It was a couple of long months of him being like, ‘I want to be with you but don’t know how to break up with my girlfriend.’ It really sucked. I hadn’t seen him for a long time but he came out to California and we started a relationship. Remi Wolf via Genius Limited Edition Cassette Tracklisting I felt so happy and free creating this song and I hope it makes whoever is listening feel the same. This record shows a different side of my work. I’ve been performing ‘Liz’ on tour for forever and to finally have a studio version I’m proud of and can share with my OG babies feels like a weight has been lifted off my chest. I wanted to share ‘Liz’ as a gift to my little Remjobs who have been with me since the beginning and have been asking for this song everyday over the last few years. Jared will say something and then it pisses me off and then like-I do better. This take was used in the final production. Remi's response was to take her anger out on the song, recording aggressive vocals. Jared commented on her vocal ability at the time, "Remi, maybe we should run some scales". During the recording process, Remi was exhausted. A studio was temporarily rented for the recording session of the song. Even though the song's lyrical state was finished, the song was left unproduced until March of 2020 when Remi and her friends decided to meet up in the U.K. Liz only stayed at the house for a day, so most of the writing was finished by the time she left, although the full lyrics to the song were completed in under two days.
